Recently a Chinese Im- and Export store has opened in my town and as I accidently saw it I had to go in. Beside many more goods they also sell many knives. Chinese cleavers of different qualities, weights and shapes and imitations of Japanese knives as well. I bought a 7$ nakiri, I like this shape more than the Chinese style.
Here's a short description:
Brand: Yi Lun or Yi Dun
Handle: plastic imitation of Japanese Ho wood handle and black hilt, oval, symetric
Blade: 175 mm, 6.5" stainless, hardness in the 50ies
sharpened on a grinding wheel by hand
The knife isn't finished or manufactured very well (ok., worse than Henckels /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif ) but came sharp out of the box. It's better than other cheap knives I've seen.
My rating:
Fit and fish: 2.5
Performance: 3
Ergonomics: 4
All in all, if you're just looking for a sharp and comfortable knife, it's a good idea to buy it, Chinese stores shurely are a good choice (if you forget all other aspects). Better knives are much more expensive.
