I've seen numerous negative references to Bobby Flay, from what I've seen of him on Throwdown and Iron Chef I've never noticed anything particularly offensive about this guy, let's hear the dirt - why do people hate him?

The premise of Throwdown - learning a restaurant's secrets to best them in a surprize competition - is very uncouth.
I hate him because he caused gas prices to spike.
I don't hate him. He's a little arrogant but he can cook.

Climate change. That's the best one yet.
Flay's only responsible for the high gas prices. He caused China and India to raise their levels of production (Throwdown was originally an investment banking show until it got watered down by Food Network) and purchase gianormous amounts of petroleum so it couldn't find its way into North American refineries.

I don't like him because when he came to do his old food show with my old chef he was a pompous arrogant ass, total primadona and rude. I also think that he is a sloppy cook with no imagination nor does he have any special or even remotely advanced technique. He just hacks, chops and food processes everything and them squeeze bottles all over his plate of something in a coconut shell with chipotle mango salsa. I'm sure he is a solid compitent cook but as far as I can tell he's just a good business man and is marketable.

Something we would all like to be.
I sense he is arrogant but have no first hand experience. Not a great chef but a successful one.
I sense that the throwdown show is not about winning. He looks kind of embarrassed when he wins. I think it is just another competition "reality tv show" the FN has dreamed up to highlight one of their few remaining stars.

I don't hate the guy, but his persona on TV has always rubbed me the wrong way. I know a couple people who've crossed paths with him, and Brandon's description is pretty consistent with their comments, as well. I think it's fair to say he's a guy who has made the most of his skills in the kitchen and in business. He was also fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time to become a "celebrity chef" thanks to the food network and has made the most of that opportunity.
I don't care for Throwdown. I don't find it terribly interesting and I particularly don't care for the fact that the whole show is a setup and takes advantage of the local talent. The fact that they pull a switch on someone who thinks they're getting a nice feature on FN bothers me. I thought his early Boy Meets Grill show was usually interesting. It was never anything I'd go out of my way to watch, but it wasn't something I'd necessarily turn off. Invariably, during the show's setup when he would travel to some market or purveyor to find the special ingredient, a bit of condescension would almost always peek through. I don't really like it when anyone treats someone with anything other than respect.

I first started to dislike him when he went on Iron Chef Japan and jumped up on the cutting board with his shoes once the time was up.
I used to cook in NY at a place with an open kitchen which was big on the "industry hook up" - sending out tastings and samples to anyone in the business regardless of his position.
Flay was a regular there and never received one free thing from the cooks or was even acknowledged, which says a lot.
That said, I do know one of his former Pastry Sous' who loved working for him.
- Oh, and he also ran over my dog (I know it was him, there was blue cornmeal everywhere)

That's hilarious, I was thinking just today what would Bobby Flay do if there were no more chipotle or mangos.

I have never found Bobby Flay's television persona annoying, he seems okay to me. As for his cooking skills I think he tied with Susur Lee and defeated Lynne Crawford ON Iron Chef America, although I sometimes think the judges are biased because the whole format of the show is that Iron Chef shouldn't lose too often.
If I need a reason to hate him though, I'll pick because his wife is hot.

some of you are pretty harsh, he seems fine, his restaurants are fine, throwdown is fun the other chefs are getting a showpiece on FN, we meet a "celebrity" once and they are rude and arrogant because they are not our new buddy, please

Here is what Anthony Bourdain, who has a hair trigger when it comes to being harsh has to say about Flay and a few other hosts.
http://wildstylechef.com/Anthony%20Bourdain%20News.htm
Bourdain seems to think he is a good chef, although he agrees that Flay isn't the nicest guy around, which since it comes from Bourdain who isn't known as "Mr Cuddlesworth" himself makes me think his reputation is probably right on.

he kicked my pal's, Raul Jeffords owner of Penn Cove shellfish farms, employee out of a scene because he said "bam!" jokingly when he seasoned something.
Started rubbing his temples and shouting at his crew. I don't know, you be the judge.

Bourdain is hilarious as always,
As to the show taping, it still seems mild compared to most.
Just becoming a slightly famous "celebrity" means you have to a little off.
Having worked with “celebrities’ for so many years, I can tell you one would be surprised by the dark underside many of us have that only needs a little fame or power to come out of hiding.
Overall he just not seem so bad, could have been a bad day

oh yeah he sounds like a jerk and prima donna but his television persona is just not as grating as some others. Rachel Ray for instance, she is just freaking annoying.
We could start a whole other thread on celebrity idiots. I remember taking my kids to author Neil Gaiman's book signing and he treated his fans really well, took his time with each signing, drew little cartoons in the books, asked them which was their favourite parts then I read that he can be a complete @sshole to the staff at the book stores during the signings.
BTW: I would have just laughed at your buddy, that was pretty funny.

i like rachel ray :)
Do you like Rachel's cooking or do you record her show and just fast forward to the scenes where she is going towards the over/refrigerator in her tight black jeans? Not that I do that :p .
come on, i think rachel ray's cooking is the epitome of home cooking :) what's wrong with canned tomato and canned beans and canned broth? i cook like that at home :)
nothing wrong w/ canned broth, 'cept it can't touch my home made. holy water I always keep stocked in the freezer.
then again i make a new stock daily at work :p

I like Rachel Ray too. The idea of 30 min meals is something a lot of home cooks are looking for, stuff they can make quickly without a lot of fuss. I also would rather look at Rachel Ray than Giada de Laurentiis, I didn't care for Giada's show and I wasn't that impressed by her cooking. Maybe she can cook, but it wasn't something I would want to cook myself, nor eat.

Actually I think Flay's problem is the attitude he projects and I have tried a few of his recipes which aren't bad at all. Ray doesn't do too bad really when you consider what her shows are about, basic quick home cooking fast and efficient. She also states up front she isn't a trained chef.
Now Emeril is a really good cook and that I can attest to first hand. He is also exactly what you see on his morning show, really a nice guy.
I have also tried a few of the recipes from Food Network from various shows as well as PBS's old shows. I have tasted some really good recipes from Giada, Mario's, Paula, Tyler and others so what more could you ask for. The one exception is Sandra Lee.
Some of the older TV chef's I really like are Martin Yan, Will Smith as two of the best there was in both their shows being informative and the recipes. I also base a recipe on taste period.
