View Full Version : Knife Sheaths...

Hi Everyone,
I just spent 3+ hours, while watching TV, sharpening my knives with my new King #1000/#6000 waterstone. Ok, maybe it isn't so new anymore after doing 10 knives.
Anyway, I don't want the edges to get damaged now that I have put so much time into them. Right now, my primary storage location is loose in the "knife drawer". Does anyone know of anywhere I could at least get plastic/nylon/etc. sheaths for these knives to protect their edges?
Any help appreciated!

I think Fred's suggestion is a better option then the Messermeister edge guards.
Have you considered getting a knife block off Ebay? I've got three myself to keep the cutlery under control in the kitchen.
My good knives sit in a kitchen drawer attached to a magnetic strip with Saya! The thought of putting my Japanese knives loose in a kitchen drawer makes my fingers quiver in fear /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif Plus I prefer to see them attached to my hand and not laying in the kitchen drawer /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif (where's that cool bloody fingerless smiley when you need him /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif).
All kidding aside, take Fred's advice or, buy or make a magnetic strip. I don't get a very high knife density in the drawer with the magnetic strip but, it works very well.
If you have the wall space and some time, get some really nice wood and stain, add some magnets and a couple of wall screws. Then attach it to a wall stud or two and you're done.

moving to a hew house, ive moved from magnetic bars to a large drawer, which I've lined with that rubberized dhelf liner. Works ok, but I'm gonna have to revise the idea....I'm outta space

Fred,
Thanks! I had looked around the Knife Outlet site, but don't remember seeing these. Guess I must be getting blind (hmmm, maybe that is why I wear glasses... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif).
I had found these, but they seemed like they would just slip off too easily:

Now that I have put some time into making my knives sharp, I really have not enjoyed the idea of having my knives loose in the drawer. My yanagi is kept in its box, which is nice, but the box takes up too much room.
The reason for the drawer are my 2 year old and a 5 year old daughters. The knife drawer has two "tot locks" on it to keep them out. I'm probably going to upgrade that now that the knives are so sharp. They are also the reason why I like what Fred proposed. Those blade guards look like they will be a bit more difficult to remove. I can't tell if they are actually a bit "child resistant". Then again, if they were, I probably would never be able to get them out! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Once they get older, I think that the idea of using a magnetic strip or two will be more practical. I guess I'm just a paranoid parent...
Thanks for your help.

Sid,
That idea about the wood and magnetic blade holders is a great one. I bet that using an inexpensive wood cutting board would look and work great. I'm going to have to keep that one in mind!
Thanks.
Scott
Blade guards work very well, actually. The advantage is that they take less room than the blade safes, the disadvantage is that they protect only the edge. Thanks for the reminder, though. I'm going to order some in. I know F. Dick has them. Take care.

Fred,
Let me know when you do. I'll probably order one of each just to see which I like better and then get enough for the knives I have, though I think I'll probably still lean toward the blade safes.
Thanks.

Here's a quickie pic of my magnetic knife racks. Another on the right side holds everyday things like veg peeler, wine botle opener, can opener et al

Shelly,
Wow! That is one heck of a knife collection. Remind me NOT to try to rob YOUR house! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don't even consider robbing us.
You'd have to get past this first.

Looks like a happy, well fed Golden Retriever. I would worry about him licking a thief to death.
