That cleaver block was easy to build. One 8' x 8" x 1" red oak board cut into 10" lengths and some 1.5" x 3' red oak strips cut 10" long and split into 3/4" halves. Board then 2 spacers another board and on. I had all the wood rough cut at Lowes where I purchased the wood. The will cut for free then just sanded glued and finished the out side of the block. Probably cost me about $10 total.

    Joe,
I just saw the before & after pics of your cleaver...now that's what I'm talkin 'bout! EE did a phenomenal job on both the blade and the handle. The rest of your collection is quite impressive as well.

The hardest part was the sanding even with a good belt sander I still did most by hand. All you need is a good wood glue to put it together and used a 14" cast iron fry pan for a vise too.

Now if I own a router I wouldn't of needed the spacer pieces which would of made it a lot easier in my opinion.

I believe that Drew has stated that Daniel O'Malley is a former knifemaker....or maybe he studied to be one, or something to that affect. I'm second guessing not sending a couple of western handled knives along with the Carter that just went their way. Oh well, maybe another day.

You know Adam I asked several "handle/knife makers" about tackling this cleaver and none wanted to bother with it. It also had nothing to do with prices as I didn't ask anyone what they would charge for it including EE. They sent me the price when I sent them pictures of the cleaver. I never gave that a second thought either.

All I can say is this handle fits and looks as good as any of the custom made handles I own though not as fancy in some ways (multiple woods etc). But exactly what I wanted something that followed the lines of the original handle which is very functional or this. They did it perfectly and I wouldn't hesitate to have them do some more when needed.

As for my traditional handled knives they consist of 1 Watanabe and 3 Takeda's all of which have the better handles they offer. Fit and finish are great on all of them so at this time I don't need that.

Daniel is still a knife maker his back order is currently just over 8 years. He was an apprentice to Bob Kramer for a few years.
